Psalm 121 - I lift up my eyes to the hills

A message from Frank McGregor (Taken from the preface in the CD booklet):

I can still remember setting my first Psalm to music. I was living in Wandsworth, London and had just been to daily Mass at St.Thomas's Roman Catholic Church. Psalm 1 had been read during the service.

I didn’t know at the time that a Psalm was originally a Hebrew song “to be sung accompanied by a stringed instrument”, but that’s what I instinctively felt I should do. Fortunately, I could just about play one! So when I got home, I opened my RSV bible, picked up my guitar and within minutes was singing the tune on this CD. As I sang the finished song I was incredibly moved as I realised that God wanted me to be like the "Blessed man" in Psalm 1. Over 20 years later, I'm still singing the song, and still being inspired by the image of the tree by the water. I have also come to know something of the "Blessedness" that fills your life when you choose to live God’s way as opposed to any other.

Col 3:16  says: “ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” As my Christian faith was growing, so was my eagerness to read the Bible. I wanted God’s word “dwelling richly” in me and found it so much easier to learn if it had a tune.  So that first Psalm became the first of many, and I was soon setting other RSV scripture passages to music too. I often dipped into various translations but used the Revised Standard Version regularly, probably because it was the bible I’d been given at secondary school. But also, as an actor it’s style reminded me of William Shakespeare, and as I read it the text seemed to lend itself so wonderfully to being literally and dramatically sung without sounding corny, even with it’s King James “thees and thous”.

The Psalms reflect both the joy and sorrow of human experience in relation to God, so it’s not suprising that many of our hymns are based on them because we can all relate in some way to them. Setting psalm 51 to music made David’s words my own at a real low point as I realised how often I failed God and how often he forgave me. I knew all about the clean heart God provides but for the first time I wanted one for myself! Psalm 139 came out of my involvement with the pro-life movement and I often sang it in churches or at events with a slide presentation of life development in the womb. These are pictures which we so often take for granted, but are as “fearful and wonderful” as ever.

As I read Psalm 42, I pictured David on the run from Saul, weary and depressed, physically and spiritually hungry, tormented in his mind, mocked by his enemies who sneer “Where is your God?” Yet still he prays, with mixed emotions, suffering, yet hoping in God. Haven’t we all wondered if God has forgotten us at times in our lives? Haven’t we all drawn strength and hope to carry on at such times through reading and praying the Psalms?
